Marie C. Smith

Marie C. Smith, 98, of 13261 Laurel Dr., Apt. 1311, Meadville, formerly of Salem House, Golfview Manor, Meadville, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Meadville Medical Center.

Marie was born in Meadville, on September 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Vincent J. and Margaret A. (Pieffley) Davern.

On September 14, 1946 Marie married Rae F. Smith; he preceded her in death on June 24, 2008.

She was a life long member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville.

Marie loved being a homemaker and raising her family. For many years she worked alongside her husband, Rae, and ran the office of their family business, Smith's Radio and TV Service. In her earlier years she was employed as Secretary to former Gov. Raymond P. Shafer at his law firm, by the former Kokan Automotive of Meadville, and by the former Keystone Ordnance. A 1936 graduate of Meadville High School, Marie graduated from the former Meadville Commercial College with her Associate's Degree. She was a member of the Gardening Division of Meadville Women's Club. Whether with family or among her card club groups, Marie loved playing cards. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family; she especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren's sporting events, school activities and dance recitals. At the young age of 98, Marie enjoyed a sharp mind, active body, good health and her independence. She and her family were truly blessed.

Marie is survived by two sons Thomas R. Smith and his wife JoAnn of Blooming Valley, Mark T. "Tim" Smith and his wife Debbie of Meadville, five grandchildren Mark T. Smith and his wife Nicole, Elizabeth "Libby" Smith, both of Meadville, Paula A. Acre and her husband Mike of Freeport, Kyle T. Smith of Pittsburgh, Pamela A. Smith of Lewisburg, three great grandchildren Natalie Grace Smith, Patrick Timothy Smith, Levi Ray Acre, a sister in law Betty Davern of Meadville, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Rae of 61 years and her parents, Marie was preceded in death by a sister Frances Williams, five brothers William, James, Jack, Paul and Joseph Davern.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 10, 2017, with Fr. Tom Trocchio, Parochial Vicar, officiating.

Marie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Rae, in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
