Stephen J. Maziarz

Stephen J. Maziarz, 91, of Saegertown passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Meadville Medical Center following a short illness.

He was a son of the late Frank and Sophia (Gawrys) Maziarz of Meadville. He was one of a family of seven siblings, all of whom predeceased him; Bertha Eiseman, Edward Maziarz, Chester Maziarz, Frances Pasikoski and Genevieve Rose, all of Meadville and Cecelia Tkach of Guys Mills.

Stephen attended St. Brigid grade school and graduated from Meadville High School. Following enlistment in the US Army, he served in the 9th Armored Division in WW II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. After three tours of duty in Korea, he retired as Sgt. 1st Class after 22 years of service. Stephen earned an Associate Degree in Business from Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, and retired from his second career, working in the Assessors Office at the Crawford County Court House.

Mr. Maziarz is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret (LeGuard) and by his only son Gregory of Meadville. He is also survived by sisters in law and brothers in law in Canada. His numerous nieces, nephews and their families will forever treasure his smile, his laugh and all the great stories he told them. As a boy, Steve grew up beside French Creek where he fished and canoed, and after a brief absence from creekside for war duties, he returned to live by its waters once again. He may have left French Creek for brief periods, but French Creek never left him.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 9-11:30 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon, on Saturday at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, with Fr. Matthew Kujawinski, Pastor of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, officiating.
