Alfred Furno, Sr.

The family of Alfred Furno, Sr., 89, sadly announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather on Friday, April 5, 2019. Alfred passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in his home.

He was born on November 4, 1929 at his parents' home in Fifth Ward in Meadville where he chose to remain his entire life. He was the son of the late Dominick and Maria (Nuzzolo) Furno.

He married Nora "Dutch" Haines Furno on October 7, 1949; she preceded him in death on January 13, 2013.

Alfred was a life long member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church.

After 35 years of service, Alfred retired from the former Brakeshoe Corporation where he worked in the Machine Shop. He wisely retired at the age of 55 as the opportunity presented itself so that he could enjoy many years unencumbered. (If we could all be so lucky!) After retirement he chose to spend his time helping others out, especially his brother in law Marvin Perry of Perry's Plumbing. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need at a moments notice. He was a member of the ICC, the Meadville Club, Eagles, Hunting and Fishing Club and Vernon Volunteers Station 27 social clubs where he loved to socialize with friends. (Again, he definitely enjoyed his retirement!)

He is survived by a son Alfred Furno, Jr. and Susan Bower; daughter Marilyn Furno Shelledy and Jim Shelledy, grandchildren Christopher McHale (Flor McHale), Lindsey Shelledy Edmondson (Bryce Edmondson) and Jarrett Furno. He is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Alfred was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife, Nora Haines Furno. He joined his 12 siblings when he left us; seven brothers Angelo, Anthony, Frank, Albert, Matteo, Dominick and John Furno, five sisters Angie, Ann, Ethel, Lucy and an infant sister Angelina. You know, the traditional large Italian family!

Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, from 11-1 at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Fr. Andrew Boyd, Parochial Vicar, officiating.

Alfred will be laid to rest with his wife in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
