Mr. Anthony 'Tad' N. Garnavish, 85, of 557 North St., Meadville passed away Friday, November 12, 2010 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.
Mr. Garnavish was born in Monongahela on July 12, 1925, the son of the late John J. and Anna (Potts) Garnavish.
On March 13, 1946 Tad married Ruth L. Hunt; she survives.
He was a member of St. Pauls United Church of Christ, Meadville.
From 1942 until his retirement in 1985 Anthony was employed by the former American Viscose of Meadville where, over the years, he worked in the processing department, as an electrical engineer and retired as a sheet metal worker. He attended schools in Monongahela before moving to Meadville where he attended two years at Meadville High School. Joining the US Navy on September 6, 1943, Tad served his country during WW II until his honorable discharge on December 17, 1945. During that time he had been stationed in the Philippines. A life member of both VFW Post #2006 and the former Keystone Hose Co., Tad was also a member of the American Legion. A die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and sports enthusiast, Tad enjoyed playing softball at the North Street Softball Field and was a member of the State Championship Team Avisco. An avid golfer, he played in several golf leagues and during that time shot a hole in one. He enjoyed bowling with his wife, Ruth, in The Senior Couples League.
In addition to his wife Ruth of 64 years, Tad is survived by three children Gary E. Garnavish and his wife Wanda of Erie, Diana G. Teasdale and her husband William of Meadville, Debbie Jo Colwell of Jamestown, four grandchildren, Christine Heslinga and her husband Joshua, Kimberly Ingebretsen and her husband Brent, Kathryn Garnavish, Heather Garnavish, two great grandchildren Eleanor and Audrey Heslinga, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Tad was preceded in death by a sister Lorraine McMahon and a brother John W. 'Bill' Garnavish.Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, November 15, 2010, from 4-8 and also on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, from 10-11 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA 16335 where Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Joel DiAngi of St. Paul United Church of Christ and Rev. Martin Hardy, former Pastor of St. Paul United Church of Christ, officiating.
Interment will take place in Greendale Cemetery, Meadville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Pauls United Church of Christ, 1070 Park Ave., Meadville, PA 16335.
