August 'Gus' A. Edwards

August A. Edwards, known to his family and friends as Gus, went to be with the Lord at the age of 53 on June 1, 2011 after a long battle with lung cancer. Gus strength throughout his battle with cancer is one to be commended. His positive attitude was a blessing from God and also a blessing to his family and friends who surrounded him with love at the end. He never overlooked an opportunity to tell someone about his faith in God and his hope that they too would discover the same faith.
Gus was born in Bridgeport, CT on October 7, 1957, the youngest child of the late John and Mary Elizabeth (Hatch) Edwards. He married his wife, Dawn L. Durfee, on December 18, 1982 and had his first and only child, daughter Jessica N. Edwards, nine months later.
For 34 years, Gus worked at Foamex which was formerly known as Corry Foam. Prior to that, Gus was employed by Dicks Sporting Goods, the former Union City Chair Co., Watts Fluid Power and the Parks Department, both of Portsmouth, NH. He was a 1976 graduate of Union City High School and had previously attended schools in Waterford, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
Gus was a person many were drawn to; he was outgoing, fun, and full of funny stories and anecdotes he never hesitated to tell. He was an avid hunter, a knowledgeable and skilled fisherman, a good golfer, and a practiced bowler. He also enjoyed playing softball and basketball and was a NASCAR fan. Gus was a member of Lyona Bible Church, Guys Mills, where he was active in the church Sportsman Ministries.
All of these hobbies and enjoyments were usually used as opportunities for fellowship with friends or family members who he valued very much. These same friends and family members showed Gus such love and support at the end of his life that was so appreciated.
In addition to his wife Dawn of 28 years, and his daughter Jessica, Gus is survived by two sisters Rose Marie Rose and her husband William of Mill Village, Betty Jean Edwards of Rochester, NH. He is also survived by a brother Kim W. Edwards of Houston, TX, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gus was preceded in death by his infant brother John Edwards.
Though we, his family and friends, miss him more than words can say, we are also joyful because we know we will see him again.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011, at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Timothy Flick, a close friend of the family, officiating.
Interment will take place in Townville Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 505 Poplar St., Suite 310, Meadville, PA 16335.
