Benedict 'Ben' J. Miceli, 87, of 951 Grove St,. Meadville, passed away Thursday, March 6th, 2014 at Meadville Medical Center.
Ben was born in Meadville, on February 27, 1927, a son of the late John and Frances A. (Lapuma) Miceli.
He was a member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church where he had served as Chairman of the Building Committee.
In the early 1970s Ben retired from Conneaut School District where he worked as a Social Studies teacher at Conneaut Lake High School. Additionally he worked part time at the family business, John Miceli Fruit Company, until his retirement when he joined the family business full time up until the time of its closing in 1999. In January, 1945, Ben graduated from Meadville High School and attended Allegheny College until being drafted into the US Army. He served his country honorably during WW II from May 14, 1945 until his discharge on October 27, 1946. Following his discharge Ben was eager to continue his education and continued his studies at Allegheny College where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and later his Masters Degree in Education. While at Allegheny College, Ben was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. A strong supporter of his community, Ben served as past Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wesbury Retirement Community, Past President of the former Sunrise Kiwanis, Past Chairman of the Memorial Day Observance Committee, former trustee of Edinboro University and was Chairman of the Millennium Committee. He was also a member of the Board of Incorporators of Meadville Medical Center, the V.N.A. Board, Masonic Lodge # 234, Meadville Country Club and the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club.
Ben is survived by three brothers Joseph P. Miceli and his wife Sandra of Meadville, Samuel Miceli of Moreno Valley, CA, Frank P. Miceli and his wife Lucy of Meadville, a sister-in-law Bernice C. Miceli of Riverside, CA, six nephews John Benedict Miceli, John Michael Miceli, Benedict John Miceli, Victor L. Miceli, Joseph Francis Miceli, Dr. John Edward Mahoney Miceli, three nieces Frances Anna Miceli, Heidi Miceli Davies and Lisa Ann Miceli.
In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by a brother Judge Victor L. Miceli and a sister-in-law Margaret Miceli.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 3-6 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 10th, with Fr. Johnathan Schmolt, Pastor, officiating.
Ben will be laid to rest in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
