Dr. Benjamin David Haytock, age 80, of Meadville, and Port Charlotte, FL, passed away unexpectedly on April 10, 2025, in Marsala, Sicily, while on vacation with his wife, Nancy. He leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence, community service, and deep family devotion.
Benjamin was born on September 4, 1944, in Greensboro, NC, a son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Cross) Haytock III.
Ben and Nancy met in their first week at Allegheny College and were married August 13, 1966. They shared almost sixty years of love and companionship, delighting in their children and grandchildren.
Dr. Haytock received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Allegheny College in 1966 where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was awarded a National Science Foundation Fellowship to further his studies at Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned both his Master's and Doctorate degrees in Mathematics.
In 1971 Ben embarked on a distinguished career at Allegheny College, where he became a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. During his tenure, he held the roles of Associate Dean of the College and Registrar, demonstrating his commitment to the institution and its students. He also taught Computer Science at the University of Sheffield in England. He retired from Allegheny as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2008.
Ben and Nancy enjoyed travel throughout their life together. The family camped in the US and Canada in a tent and then a camper trailer. Later Ben and Nancy took yearly trips to Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. After retirement, Ben and Nancy spent the winter months in Port Charlotte, FL, where they enjoyed an active outdoor lifestyle and many friends in the Riverwood Community.
In addition to his professional achievements, Ben was known for his warm heart and commitment to service. Following his retirement, he volunteered with CASA and the local Soup Kitchen. He was a long-standing member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. He also represented the Presbytery of Lake Erie as liaison to Gravel Run and Watson Run Churches. While residing in Port Charlotte, Florida, he became an associate member of Gulf Cove United Methodist Church. He also was a former member of the Meadville RoundTable and Literary Union.
Ben's passion for life extended beyond academics and service. He was an accomplished photographer whose work was showcased in magazines and juried art shows. An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing in various leagues. His love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included hiking, canoeing, camping, and annual family vacations at Cook Forest.
What meant most to Ben was his family. They were always on his mind and in his heart. He is survived by his devoted wife Nancy Branstrom Haytock; their children, Dr. Jennifer Anne Haytock of Brockport, NY, and B. Dawson Haytock and his wife Kimberly of Allison Park; three grandchildren, Benjamin Haytock, Elizabeth Haytock, and Daniel Haytock; a sister-in-law, Karrin Jones of Florida; and numerous cousins. Ben was preceded in death by his brother, R. Kent Haytock.
Visitation is from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, with the Reverend Ben Black, Senior Pastor, officiating.
Ben will be laid to rest in Greendale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ben's memory to First Presbyterian Church, or Allegheny College, both of Meadville, or a charity of the donor's choice.
