C. Ruth King, 102, of 9108 State Hwy. 198, Conneautville, formerly of Maple St., Meadville, passed away Thursday, July 7th, 2011, at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville.
Ruth was born in Rockdale Twp., Crawford County, on June 19, 1909, a daughter of the late George A. and Dora E. (Jones) King.
She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal, Meadville.
A graduate of Meadville High School, Ruth was also a graduate of Edinboro College and the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN. In her earlier years she had been employed by Kahler Hospital in Rochester, MN and Penna Electric Company of Meadville. She served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps during WW II and the Korean Conflict. She began her service on September 14, 1945 and was honorably discharged on April 1, 1953. She was stationed at Fort New Cumberland, The Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Fort Detrick, Fort Campbell, Fort Lewis and in Army Hospitals in Kobe and Kyoto, Japan, receiving many medals and commendations for her meritorious service. After leaving the service, she was employed as a school nurse by the Meadville Area School District from 1953 until her retirement in 1974. She was an active Red Cross volunteer and had been a member of Meadville Professional Womens Club, the former Spencer Hospital Auxiliary, Retired Army Nurse Corps Association., Retired Officers Association. and the PA Association of School Retirees.
Ruth has devoted her life to the care and well being of others. She often reminisced that she worked with Dr. Mayo, founder of the renowned Mayo Clinic and she remembered well many of the famous patients that had been under her care. Her fondest memories were of her traveling and visiting family and friends.
Ruth is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Cecille M. DeKruif and a brother George E. King.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Christ Church Episcopal, 870 Diamond Square, Meadville, with Dr. Rev. Richard Elberfeld, Pastor, officiating.
Entombment with Full Military Honors will take place in Christ Church Episcopal Columbium, Meadville.
Arraignments are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA 16335.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church Episcopal, 870 Diamond Square, Meadville, PA 16335.
