Donald Kenneth Wood, 77, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Meadville, was known as "Woody" and "Papa" to many. After testing positive for Covid-19 on August 25, then hospitalized on August 27, Don battled until September 7, 2020, when he lost his fight due to damage caused by the virus. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Donald was born in Meadville, on February 10, 1943, a son of the late Virgil and Mavis (Kingsley) Wood.
On November 20, 1965 Don and Gail were married at St. Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church in Saegertown; their wedding was the first official "service" that was held there.
Don was a graduate of the class of 1961 of Meadville Area Senior High School. Upon graduation, He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1964. He was a member of Saint Bernadette’s\Saint Agatha Roman Catholic Church of Meadville, and Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Lakeland, FL. He was the owner/partner of Joint Venture Tool & Mold in Saegertown, until he retired in September 2001.
Don’s favorite pastime activities included dancing with his wife, playing softball, where he actively played until the age of 72 in several leagues, playing cards and pool with friends, reading spy novels, attending many sporting events, and he had an absolute passion for baseball.
Don provided a strong foundation for his family and is survived by the love of this life, Gail (Schruers) Wood; a son, Dean (Sheila) Wood; a daughter Denise (Rob) Robison, both of Saegertown; a sister, Betty (Russell) Prussia of Saegertown; nine beloved grandchildren Megan (Aaron) Schlaudecker, Mackenzie Wood, David Bradley, Mitchell Wood, Dalaney Wood, Marissa Robison, Miranda (Greg) Fisher, Makenna Robison, and Miquel Robison; three great grandchildren, Amelia Sutter, Brixton and Cohen Fisher; sister in law, Nila (Phil) Passilla; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marjorie Schepner and Patricia Hollabaugh.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4-8 PM on Friday, September 11, 2020, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE. CDC guidelines will be followed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, at St. Agatha Roman Catholic Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville, with Fr. Jeff Lucas, Pastor, officiating.
As a proud US Army veteran, Donald will be laid to rest in Venango Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his memory to the Meadville Area Senior High School Baseball program.
