Mr. Donald R. Sippy, 85, of 88 Quail Rd, Greensburg, formerly of 557 Chestnut St. Meadville, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.
Donald was born in Akron, IN on August 18, 1924, the son of the late Robert and Ina (Floor) Sippy.
On June 8, 1996 Donald married Alice M. (Weiland) Nies; she survives. He had previously been married to Elizabeth Smith Sippy; she preceded him in death on November 3, 1995.
While living in Meadville, he was a member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church.
From 1945 until his retirement in 1982 Don was employed by Erie Lackawanna Railroad, later known as Conrail, where he worked as a supervisor in the work equipment department. A WW II US Navy veteran, Donald served his country from December 4, 1942 until his honorable discharge on October 14, 1945. During that time he served in the South Pacific Theatre. A 1945 graduate of Meadville High School, Don had been a resident of Meadville since 1932. Don was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #2006, the Meadville Elks Club and the Meadville Club. His hobbies included fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife Alice of 13 years, Donald is survived by two daughters Carol Hannold and her husband Gail, Janice Kelley and her husband Patrick, all of Meadville, three grandchildren David Stephens of Guys Mills, Lisa Woods of Meadville, Patrick Kelley II of Paducah, KY, two step grandchildren Kathleen Carr and her husband Rob of Apex, NC, Sean Kelley of Miami, FL, four great grandchildren, six step children Mary Ann Cecconello and her husband Angelo of Greensburg, Patricia Tatman and her husband Greg of Meadville, Arthur J. Nies and his wife Karen of Meadville, Ronald R. Nies of Prospect Park, James A. Nies of Meadville, Charles E. Nies and his wife Christine of Cooperstown, 18 step grandchildren, 8 step greatgrandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, Elizabeth of 52 years, and his parents, Donald was preceded in death by an infant son Donald Ray Sippy, Jr., a sister Ruby Fugagli, four brothers Merl Sippy, Robert Sippy, Jr., Henry L. 'Hank' Sippy and an infant brother Sherman Sippy.Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA 16335 where a scripture service will be conducted at 8:30 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 15, 2010 at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville, with Fr. James Piszker, Chaplain of Mercyhurst College, officiating.
Entombment will take place with full Military Honors in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 464 Pine St. or St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., both of Meadville, PA 16335.
