Dustin Tran Herman of Pittsburgh passed away December 10, 2019 after a short and severe illness.
He was 44.
Born in Can Tho, Vietnam on March 21, 1975, he emigrated to the United States and joined the Herman family in Meadville, PA later that year.
A 1993 graduate of Meadville High School, Dustin also attended the College of Wooster and the University of Pittsburgh. He spent many years tending bars throughout Pittsburgh, earning the admiration of many people around the city with his signature enthusiasm, charm, and wit. According to his brother, Nathan, “Dustin could talk about any subject with anyone—and he was the most hilarious person I’ll ever meet.” Dustin was also known for his unparalleled kindness, with family, friends, and even strangers. In 2019, Dustin literally took the shirt off his back when he anonymously gave his Penguins jersey to a young girl at a game after hearing she was scheduled to have brain surgery the following day. Her father discovered who had been responsible for this generosity and approached the Penguins to share the story. A few weeks later, Dustin was surprised with a handwritten thank you card from the young girl accompanied by a signed jersey belonging to Sidney Crosby. When not spending time with friends and family, Dustin could be found golfing, but more likely fly-fishing, his most beloved pastime.
Dustin will be remembered for his sense of humor, his unrestrained energy, deep compassion and affectionate ways.
Dustin will be sadly missed by his mother, Martha Herman, of Meadville and his adoring brother, Nathan and Kate of Chicago, as well as close friends Terri Gilmore of Meadville and Greg Novak of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by Don Herman, several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandmother Rosemarie Palmiero, grandparents John & Erma Herman, and his beloved labrador Marley.
A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 PM on Friday, December 20th at St. Agatha’s Church, 353 Pine St., Meadville with Father Jeffrey Lucas as celebrant.
Dustin will be laid to rest in St. Brigid Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United We Dream (website: unitedwedream.org).
Arrangements are under the direction of STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST. MEADVILLE.
