Effie Irene (Swavey) Axtell, 94, of 18632 Black Rd., Saegertown, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at Meadville Medical Center.
Effie was born in Meadville, on October 26, 1921, a daughter of the late Roy and Reba (Cutshall) Swavey.
In the early 1940's Effie married Sam Axtell; he was killed during WW II while serving as a Gunner on the USS Cabot Aircraft Carrier. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
At the age of 17 Effie graduated from Meadville High School and was married at the age of 18. Unfortunately she became a widow in her early 20's. After 40 years of service, Effie retired from the former American Viscose where she worked in the Coning Department. Her hobbies included collecting antique dolls as well as glassware, attending garage sales and rose gardening.
Effie is survived by two great nephews Dr. Michael Swavey, Mark Swavey and his wife Ji Lou, who were like grandsons to her, a niece-in-law Barb Swavey who was like a daughter, a niece Joyce Ann Butterfield, nephew Ronald Dietz, niece Rebecca Smith, as well as many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Effie was preceded in death by a brother Robert Lynn Swavey, two sisters Mide Dietz, Wanda Dietz and a nephew Jerry Swavey whom she helped raise.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of family.
