Eugene "Augie" L. Augustine

Eugene "Augie" L. Augustine, 83, of 640 Worth St., Corry, PA, formerly of 226 Brandywine Trail, Frostproof, FL, passed away Thursday, September 1, 106 at Corry.

Eugene was born in Shickley, NE on March 13, 1933, a son of the late John and Ella (Birky) Augustine.

In 1954 Eugene married Santa Carol Burdge; together they had two children, raising them in Spartansburg, PA. He moved to Florida in January, 1978. Augie married Beverly "Bevie" Carol Messenger on August 12, 1983; she preceded him in death in 2001.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by an infant brother Dean Harold Augustine.

Augie was born and raised in Nebraska and at the age of 19 moved from Shickley to Spartansburg, PA with his family. He began farming and later worked in various steel factories in Corry and Erie, PA, for many years. In 1978 Augie moved to Florida where he worked construction and was a member of the Laborers International Union - Local #517 in Orlando. Following his retirement at age 65 Augie continued working weekends for another 17 years at Adult Toy Storage in Orlando, parking boats and RVs. Although he enjoyed living in Florida, he looked forward to traveling north for a few weeks each year to visit and connect with his family and friends. He enjoyed working on cars and staying busy. Augie was a hard worker his entire life. He found great pleasure in giving to, doing for and helping others. He was a wonderful caregiver to his wife, Bevie, as she battled cancer. A year or so after her death, he traveled to visit his original home in Nebraska and his family and friends in Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas. Augie had a joy for living and had battled valiantly against cancer for the past three years, returning to PA in January, 2016 to be closer to his family and friends during his final months. He will be deeply missed.

Augie is survived a daughter Caroline Calhoun and her husband Jack of Columbus, a son Ricky Augustine and his wife Gloria of Meadville, six grandchildren John Calhoun, Joe Calhoun, Cara Calhoun MaGill, Richard "Gene" Augustine, Josh Augustine and Tamara L. "Tami" Augustine, two step grandsons Jack Calhoun, Jr., Gene Calhoun, 16 great grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, a sister Phyllis Holthouse and her husband Glen, a nephew, two nieces and many friends.

A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Valley View Mennonite Church, 24313 PA-89, Spartansburg, with Pastor Robb Esh officiating.

Augie will be laid to rest in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Avon Park, FL.
