Frank C. Fischer, 93, of Meadville, passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at Marquette Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Frank was born in McKees Rocks on March 22, 1925, a son of the late Frank X. and Florence (Mennhan) Fischer, Sr.
On December 16, 1988 Frank married Carmella A. (Jones) Nuzzulo; she survives.
He was an active member St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church., Meadville.
A 60 year member of the National Elevator Constructors Local #6, Pittsburgh, Frank began his employment in 1952 with the Westinghouse Electric Company Elevator Division. Following his retirement in 1981, he was employed by the State of PA Elevator Inspector Division. A US Navy participant of both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, Frank served his country from March 19, 1943 until his honorable discharge in February, 1946. During that time he was stationed on an 800 man ship, the USS Milwaukee. He was part of a 100 man crew which sailed the USS Milwaukee to the Soviet Union, then, for the next month, instructed the Russians how to man it. He went on to serve on the SS President Warfield which was a station and accommodations ship at Omaha Beach at Normandy during the invasion. Upon his return to the U.S., Frank was assigned to the USS Chicago which set sail for Japan and was involved with the bombing of Japan. There in Tokyo Bay, he witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty. Frank was a 1943 graduate of Miles Bryan High School, McKees Rocks. A lifetime member of both the VFW Post #2006 and the Meadville Elks Club, Frank continued to hold his membership with the National Elevator Constructors Local #6 and was a former member of the Meadville Club. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan.
In addition to his wife Carmella of 30 years, Frank is survived by a sister Jane Branton of Pittsburgh, two nieces Colleen and Lynn.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation.
Private Services will be held with Fr. Andrew Boyd, Parochial Vicar, officiating.
Entombment with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006 will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St. or Hospice of Crawford County, 766 Liberty St., both in Meadville, PA 16335.
