George A. Watson

George A. Watson, 88, of Saegertown, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at UPMC-Hamot Medical Center, Erie.

George was born in Meadville, on February 21, 1931, a son of the late Blaine C. and Thora (Davis) Watson.

On April 6, 1954 George married Betty Hall; she preceded him in death on May 1, 2005.

In 1996 George retired as a Dairy Farm Inspector for Dean Food's, formerly known as Hawthorne Melody Dairy.  He had previously been employed by Erie-Crawford Dairy Co-op in Saegertown and by the former Struthers Wells in Titusville.  Not one to rest, after retirement George worked on small engines and could often be found on his John Deere riding mower mowing his acres of lawn, something he loved doing. A patriot and veteran of the Korean Conflict, George entered the US Army on August 7, 1952 and served his country honorably until his discharge on May 6, 1954; he attained the rank of Sergeant in command of a Motor Pool in Korea. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He attended Saegertown Community Church and Saegertown High School. For more than 50 years, George served on the Board of Directors of Venango Cemetery where he held various offices including President. In his spare time, George worked on rebuilding and repairing tractors and automobiles. It was common practice for George to be routinely called upon by neighbors and farmers throughout the area to repair their vehicles, tractors, and other equipment. He was always glad to get them up and running. He also enjoyed gardening and hunting, especially with his family at the cabin in Potter County. He will be sadly missed.

George is survived by a son David M. Watson and his wife Janet of Saegertown, three grandchildren, David Watson, Jr., Steven Watson (Shannon), Jonathan Watson, a brother Ralph "Jim" Watson of Saegertown, and 17 nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Betty, of 51 years, George was preceded in death by two sons Robert and Daniel Watson, and three brothers, Robert Watson, George (Skeeter) Schmitt, and Howard (Herk) Schmitt.

Family and friends are invited to call from 5-8 PM on Monday, May 20, and also on Tuesday from 12-1 PM at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 330 BROAD ST., SAEGERTOWN, where Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM with Pastor Richard Haemer of Saegertown Community Church officiating.

George will be laid to rest next to his wife, Betty, in Venango Cemetery with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.
