George H. Engelhardt, Jr.

George H. Engelhardt, Jr., 91, of Saegertown, formerly of Meadville, passed away Monday, June 28, 2021 at Crawford County Care Center.

George was born in Jersey City, NJ on May 21, 1930, a son of the late George H. and Helen (Dallery) Engelhardt, Sr.

On September 16, 1950 George married Ernestine M. "Ernie" Magnacca; she preceded him in death on April 15, 2017.

He was a member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church where he had served as an usher and also played the trumpet for holidays and special events.

In 1995 George retired as a die sinker from CNC Corp. where he had been employed since 1978. He had previously been employed by Meadville Forge six years and by Channellock for 21 years. He was a 1947 graduate of Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City, NJ. Playing the trumpet was George's passion in life. In his earlier years he played the trumpet with several local bands including Bob Truran and the Bobcats, Pat Dalessio and the Leisures and with the Fred Haynes Band where they play at the Crawford County Fair for 20 years. While living in Colorado Springs, CO for 20 years, George shared his love of playing the trumpet, especially Dixieland music, with various groups. In his later years he volunteered his trumpet playing to VFW Post #2006 Color Guard where he played Taps at the funerals of 600 local veterans. He considered it an honor playing Taps each and every time.

George is survived by three children Bruce Engelhardt (Shirley) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Carol Hughes (Donald) of Meadville, George J. Engelhardt (Lori) of Colorado Springs, CO, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, a sister Doris Esterwood of Berea, OH, nine nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Ernie of 66 years.

Private visitation and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Epiphany of the Lord Parish, St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Fr. Joe Petrone, Parochial Vicar, officiating.

George will be laid to rest with his wife, Ernie, in St. Brigid Cemetery.
