Gordon James Cole

Gordon James Cole, a resident of Juniper Village, formerly of 13723 Hwy 98, Meadville for twenty years passed away on August 2, 2013 at Meadville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 90.

He was born in Meadville on October 9, 1922, the son of Gordon Dennis and Ruby Van Horne Cole, they preceded him in death.

He graduated from Meadville High School in 1941, attended Allegheny College for a brief time before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served on the U.S.S Malloy (Destroyer Escort) patrolling the North Atlantic throughout World War II, and was part of the contingency at Normandy, France on D-Day. After the war Gordon returned to Meadville and graduated from Erie Business College.

He married Dorothy LaRae Moyer Harvey on August 28, 1946. She preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two sisters: Clementine Shoup and Edith Hutchinson, a stepson Michael D. Harvey and his son in law David Hunt.

He is survived by one daughter Linda Hathaway Hunt of Winter Springs, FL., one son Dennis Cole and his wife Beth of Venice, FL (formerly Meadville), one brother, Lawrence (Sonny) Cole of Rough and Ready, CA. He is also survived by his companion and friend Jean Clawson of Linesville, two granddaughters, Christine Cole Csonka and her husband Sam of Greenville and Beth Valentine Clawges and her husband Jason of Morgantown, WV. Five great grandchildren: Kamarin, Carlin, Chloe and Emily DiRaimondo of Greenville, and Jonathan Cole Clawges of Morgantown, WV., one great great-granddaughter Georgia Rose Swiger, of Greenville, three step granddaughters, Carleigh Brunot of Portland, OR, Kaylan Brunot Fagan of Scottsdale, AZ, and Charris Brunot of Erie, two great step grandsons, Tyler and Jake Csonka of Greenville.

He was an accountant by trade, having worked most of his career at Aetna Machine Co. in Cochranton. He was a 32nd degree Mason, belonging to Masonic Lodge 234 in Meadville for over 50 years. He was a Past Monarch of Kismet Grotto, and a life long member of the New Castle Masonic Consistory, Elks Lodge 219 and VFW Post 2006. He was also a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association (D.E.S.A.) Gordon was an avid golfer and once scored a hole in one at Whispering Pines Golf Course. He very much enjoyed all four seasons of northwest Pennsylvania. Gordon loved the outdoors and could be found on Tamarack Lake in the coldest of weather with his fishing and golfing buddy John Hodges. He also enjoyed travelling though out the United States to attend D.E.S.A. conventions, and was active in his Masonic Lodge and Kismet Grotto.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, August 9 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a Masonic memorial service is to be held at 7pm.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 10 at 10 am at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., with Pastor Ron Brown of The Changing Place, Meadville, officiating.

Interment with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006 will take place in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
