John Burton Jewell, 82, passed quietly on the morning of Sunday, July 2, 2017.
He was born in Meadville on September 23, 1934, to Harold Leslie Jewell and Marcella Rabbitt Jewell.
He graduated from Meadville High School in 1952. He attended Williamsport Technical School and completed various correspondence courses. He was proud to acquire an amateur radio technician license and an FCC General Class commercial license.
John was honorably discharged from the United States Army, having served in Europe, where he had the opportunity to visit many countries. He reminisced particularly about his time in Italy. He married Sharon A. Green, who preceded him in death. They enjoyed many vacation tours across the United States and Canada. They attended St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church of Meadville, where John attended elementary school, and continued to serve as an usher and choir member.
John worked for many years as a technician for Meadville Master Antenna. An intelligent man with an inquisitive mind, he never stopped learning, and continued to encourage those close to him in the pursuit of knowledge. Younger generations could turn to him for tips and advice on computer systems and all things technological. John was admirably independent and self-reliant until his last days. He was eager to serve his friends and neighbors in any way he could, and continued to do so until his recent illness. A man of quiet strength, steadfast reliability, and impeccable manners, he continues as a model to all who knew and loved him. Upon his passing, one young friend stated, "He was the best man that I have ever known."
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three sisters: Lucile Shade Echnoz, Patricia J. Lord, and Rosalind J. Neal.
He is survived by a brother, Norman H. Jewell, and his wife, Sheila Rae Jewell of Brentwood, California; a sister-in-law and her husband, Charna and Gary Wolfe, of Cambridge Springs; his dear friend, Barbara Straub, of Cochranton; and a score of cousins, nieces, and nephews, who will deeply miss his pleasant company.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 3-5 PM at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 7th, with Fr. Tom Trocchio, Parochial Vicar, officiating.
Following Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006, John will be laid to rest next to his wife, Sharon, in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
