John Joseph Myers, Sr., 92, of 20881 State Hwy. 198, Saegertown, formerly of 225 Echnoz Ave., Meadville, passed away Saturday, September 14th, 2013 at Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown.
John was born in Meadville, on September 28, 1920, a son of the late Louis and Josephine (Rotkievecz) Maziarz which was later changed to Myers.
On October 5, 1946 John married Helen J. Pontillo; she preceded him in death on October 15, 1995.
He was a member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Meadville.
After more than 35 years of service, John retired from Plant #5 of the former Talon, Inc. of Meadville. He was also employed part time by Nageotte Roofing and continued in roofing after his retirement from Talon. In his earlier years, he was an excellent baseball player and John also won a State Championship in Horseshoes. He served in the US Navy during WW II until his honorable discharge. John was a graduate of Meadville High School. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing and playing horseshoes .
John [fondly known as BIG D by his sons] is survived by a daughter Theresa Wykoff and her husband Skip, two sons Louis P. Myers and his wife Linda who had taken great care of him while living with them for two years, John J. Myers, Jr., all of Meadville, two granddaughters Kimberly Wykoff of Pittsburgh, Lynette Olson and her husband Brian of Cochranton, two great grandchildren Cameron and Riley Jo Olson both of Cochranton, a sister Betty Morrell of Littleton, CO, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife Helen of 49 years, John was preceded in death by a grandson Lenny Paul Myers, three sisters Sophia Miller, Helen Eastman, Bertha Marceca, two brothers Richard Myers and Louis Myers.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4-8 on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday the 18th at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Fr. Marc Solomon, Pastor, officiating.
Interment with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006 will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Crawford County, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, PA 16335.
