John L. Weagraff, 82, of Saegertown passed away on September 25, 2023 due to complications of COVID, following a courageous battle against kidney and lung disease.
He was born on April 30, 1941 to Frederick and Elsie Mae Antill Weagraff in Titusville.
He attended St. Titus grade school and St. Joseph’s Academy High School where he was senior class president. He also attended the Venango campus of Clarion College.
Stationed at Ft. Knox and Ft. Sill, he served with Battery B, 43rd artillery of the Franklin, PA Army Reserve Unit from 1960-66 during the Berlin Crisis.
He married Catherine Woika on May 2, 1964.
For 41 years, he was a respected businessman in Meadville as manager and owner of Boron and BP service stations. He was a member of several social and service organizations including Elks BPOE 219, Pioneer Investment Club, Saegertown American Legion, NRA, and Meadville AM Rotary where he served as president.
An active member of St. Bernadette’s Church since 1972, he served many years as Parish Council President and was a Eucharistic Minister, CCD teacher, lector, usher, altar server, and member of the Holy Name Society and finance committee. He and his wife provided prison ministry at the Crawford Co. Correctional Facility for five years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and tinkering. He loved traveling and reading. “My life’s greatest pleasure was sharing life with my wife and best friend, Kay, and my wonderful sons and their families and having the time to watch them grow older with me.”
In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by sons Paul (Rhonda) of Cochranton, Scott of Rifle, CO and Marc (Julie) of Cleveland; grandchildren 2nd Lt. Benjamin Weagraff (Olivia) of Soldotna, AK, Dr. Abigail Weagraff of St. Louis, Zane Weagraff of Akron, and Nathan Weagraff of Chicago; sister-in-law Viola Weagraff of Columbia, SC; and several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Bob, Ted, and George; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Weagraff and Bertha Knowles; nephew Robert and niece Karen.
Visiting will be at St. Bernadette’s Church in Saegertown on Monday, October 2, from 12:30 – 2:30 PM followed by the praying of the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet at 2:30, and a Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00, followed by Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006. Visitation will continue after mass until 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saegertown Public Library, PO Box 871, Saegertown, PA 16433.
