John Walter Stolte, 97, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2019, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
John was born in Pittsburgh, on December 9, 1921, a son of the late Walter and Betty Stolte.
On June 19, 1948 John married Dorothy Louise Schell; she preceded him in death on February 16, 2004.
After his graduation from Brentwood High School in Pittsburgh, John entered the US Army on February 17, 1941 and served his country honorably until his discharge on December 10, 1945. He was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return to the States, John became employed by Meadville Telephone Company which eventually became known as Windstream. After many years, he retired as Plant Supervisor. For many years John was a member of the Meadville Rotary Club. John enjoyed art in many forms including, sketching, painting with water colors and oil paints. He also enjoyed golfing and had the opportunity of playing with PGA golfer, Clarence Rose.
John is survived by a daughter Beverly D. Smith (Roger) of Goldsboro, NC, two grandsons Michael Smith (Michelle), Tim Smith (Jennifer), four great grandchildren Alina Smith, Sofia Smith, Riley Messimer, Raven Messimer, a daughter in love Anita Joslyn (Lynn) of Edinboro, and a niece.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Dorothy, of 55 years, John was preceded in death by a brother Bud Stolte (Helen).
Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, with Pastor Norman Aabye of Open Door Baptist Church, Venango, officiating.
A private graveside service will be held where John will be laid to rest next to his wife, Dorothy, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Vernon Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesbury UMC Foundation, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, PA 16335.
