John Wesley Hughes, 72, of Erie, formerly of Meadville, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Erie VA Medical Center Hospice Facility, after an extended illness.
John was born in Meadville, on November 11, 1951, a son of the late Wesley and Marie (Walker) Hughes.
On August 30, 1997, John married Vivian Lynn Evans; she survives.
He was married at United Faith Fellowship Church of God, Meadville, and visited Antioch Baptist Church, Erie.
John was a graduate of Meadville High School and had a long and successful career in Security following his military service in West Germany as a Border Patrol. Over the years he was employed by Erie Strayer, Fischer Security, West Telemarketing, and Montgomery Wards. A US Army veteran, John proudly served his country from September 16, 1975 until his honorable discharge on September 15, 1978. He was a member of American Legion Post #945. He was also an entrepreneur, starting a small business venture, BBQ On A Roll and was licensed as a sidewalk vendor by the City of Erie, where his mobile food cart was a part of many community events. He enjoyed making and collecting wines. He also enjoyed being a homeowner, taking care of his yard, working around the house, collecting classic cars and was an avid Raiders fan. A former drum player, John had a passion for music, especially Gospel Music and smooth jazz.
In addition to his wife, Vivian, of 26 years, John is survived by his children Shawn Warner, Kevin Levert (Melissa), David Levert, Keren Levert, Carlton Levert; his grandchildren Aleise, Rachel, Briana, Nathan, Jasmine; three sisters Patricia Hughes of Meadville, Nita Hughes of San Antonio, TX, Elaine Hughes of Meadville; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins including James Williams (Debra) of Williamsburg, VA, many friends and acquaintances.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by brothers Howard Hughes and Allen Hughes.
A Home Going Service will be held AT 11 AM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, with Pastor Floyd McClure of Antioch Baptist Church and Rev. Sylvia Reid of United Faith Fellowship Church, officiating.
John will be laid to rest in Greendale Cemetery with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.
