Leona (Charm) Overton, 86, of Meadville, entered eternal rest due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease Thursday, December 31, 2020, at home with her family.
Born on April 6, 1934 in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ora Lee (Wiley) Wilburn. She lost her mother at a young age and her father remarried (Katherine Wilson) and moved his young family (Donald, Charm and Charles, Jr.) to Meadville. She gained two additional siblings, Ellen Jean and Michael.
During her high school years, she was active in volleyball and basketball. She graduated from Meadville High School in 1953. Upon graduation, she held a variety of jobs, including at Channellock, Inc., American Viscose Company, and PPG Industries where she retired in 1994 after 22 years.
A member of Bethel A.M.E. Church since the 5th grade, she was involved at an early age in the youth choir and later years as a Sunday school teacher, an usher, and served on the missionary and trustee boards. Charm enjoyed tai chi, line dancing, reading, and was an avid doll collector with upwards of 100 in her vast collection, which included a couple that she made, Sugar Britches and Tommy. Prior to her illness, Leona was an active member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, and one of the founding members of the Heirloom Doll Society. Charm was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who influenced the lives of many family members and friends. She will be greatly missed.
On October 31, 1954, Charm married George B. Overton, Sr., he preceded her in death on October 22, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Charles Wilburn, Jr.; Donald Wilburn; Ellen Jean Brinson; and Michael Wilburn; and by her son-in-law, Russell Crutchfield.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Dianne Overton of Parsippany, NJ, Bernice Crutchfield of Reading, Michele Overton of Clinton, MD; one son, George Overton, Jr. of Meadville; one grandson, Brandon Crutchfield of Allentown; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to Bonnie McCormick, Sandy Ritchie, Gretchen Suggest, and Jennie Terregino who provided wonderful care to our mother.
In consideration of the health and safety of our family and friends due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be holding a service at this time. A celebration of Charm’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Kindred Hospice, 1119 Park Ave., #7, or the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, PO Box 205 or Crawford County Humane Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, all in Meadville, PA 16335.
Leona will be laid to rest next to her husband, Geoge, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Meadville.
Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut Street, Meadville, is entrusted with the arrangements.
