Margaret "Gargie" L. Wertz, 104, of Saegertown, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at home.
Margaret was born in Home Camp on April 18, 1912, the tenth of ten children of the late Isaiah and Sarah (Shaffer) Wertz.
She attended Portland High School, New York, graduating in 1930 and continued her education at Dunkirk College. While visiting her family in Meadville, she saw an ad offering employment at the former Talon, Inc., where she worked for the next 40 years until her retirement.
Margaret was a sports enthusiast, especially of her beloved Pittsburgh sports teams. She also enjoyed her garden, proudly sharing her harvest with family and friends. Walking was one of her favorite enjoyments. Family was of the utmost importance to her. Aunt Gargie's home was a special gathering place for all her nieces and nephews. She had over 100 nieces and nephews extending all the way to five "greats". She was known as the "cookie lady" baking for all occasions. She baked at least 35 dozen cookies each year for Christmas as all had their very favorites.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, eight sisters, one brother and a special nephew in law, Delmar Stallard.
She is survived by Marilyn L. Stallard, Mary Ann Cochran, Richard A. Oakes (Karin), Gary Graham, Toni I. O'Reilly, Karen Walls, Kim Boyle (Kathy), Judith Amsler (Kenneth), as well as many other loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, February 11, 2017, from 3-5 PM at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 330 BROAD ST., SAEGERTOWN, where Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 PM with Dr. Brian Jensen, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Meadville, officiating.
Margaret will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, NY.
In lieu of flowers, Margaret asked that donations be made in her name to one of three charities: American Heart Association, PO Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693 or Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 164, or Saegertown Women's Improvement Club, 17473 State Hwy. 86, both in Saegertown, PA 16433.
