Mary Ellen Szitas

Mary Ellen Szitas, age 89, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

She was born on July 16, 1935, the daughter of Edwin and Emma (Peterson) Walker. 

She married Sheldon (Buzz) Szitas on July 16, 1955. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1996. 

Mary Ellen graduated from Cochranton High School in 1953 where she was the valedictorian of her class. She was a devoted wife and mother and a world traveler. She visited various places, from South America to the Middle East, Europe and the South Pacific. 

Mary Ellen was an avid bowler and golfer. She was a former member of the Iroquois Boating & Fishing Club, the Meadville County Club, and the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Deborah Ann. She is survived by her three children: Mark (Sheri) Szitas of Meadville, Robert (Kathie) Szitas of Greensboro, NC, and Karen (Robert) Wengryn of Bethel Park, PA. She was also the loving grandmother to six grandchildren: Steven (Brooke) Szitas, Chuck (Jessica) Szitas, Jeremy (Cherine) Szitas, Sean Szitas, Jake Wengryn and Valerie Wengryn. 

Per Mary Ellen’s wishes, there will be a private service with her family. 

Mary Ellen will be laid to rest next to her husband, in Cochranton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty St., Meadville, or The Wesbury Foundation, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville.
