Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of our mother, Maxine Mae (Malliard) Vogan, age 89, a best friend to each of us. She was born on July 25, 1927, a daughter of the late Clifford and Florence (Crecraft) Malliard. She passed away at her home, in Woodland Mobile Home Park, in her bed, surrounded by her five daughters, Barbara Schutz, Judy Ferrari, Connie Proper, Sherry Heath and Karen Hughes, and her only son, Jim Vogan, who all reside in this community. They surrounded her with love, courage and strength as she took her last breath on earth, as she is the one who gave them their first.
It is believed that is was not caused by the cancer that was detected shortly prior to her passing, but caused instead by her hope and desire to be reunited with the love of her life, DeWayne Vogan, that went to be an angel in heaven two years ago, to create a place for her. It is believed now that she has found her peace in resting with him, and the extreme loneliness and broken heart of losing her best friend, of 69 years of marriage, is now healed.
Maxine spent her life in this area, in the communities of Cochranton, Guys Mills and then Meadville. She worked briefly at the former Talon, Inc., where she met DeWayne, worked as a child care giver for Penncrest Head Start in her home many years, and worked as a homemaker, loving wife and a mother. She believed in providing home cooked meals every day for her husband and children as they grew up. The needs of her family always came first. Up to the end of her final days, she was brave and the feelings and needs of each of us came first.
DeWayne and Maxine leave behind a legacy of love and family that will spread into generations to come, and this includes 17 grandchildren Steven Schutz, Diane Gulland, Bud Schutz, Melissa Proper, Stacey Ewing, Todd Ferrari, Lisa Chausse, Andrea Mailliard, Cindy Doyle, Daryl Vogan, John Vogan, Marie Lockwood, Rebecca Vogan, Jenny Leonhart, Jeremy Heath, Shane Malone and Timmy Malone, 31 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She leaves behind two brothers, Glenn Malliard of Meadville and Jack Malliard of Cochranton. There are too many numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members to mention, but she loved them all and each knows how special they were in her heart.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Harold Malliard and Mr. Carl Malliard, as well as her great grandchild Adam DeWayne Lockwood and her mother and father.
Maxine loved to camp. In recent years she loved to spend time at the Bud and Sandy Harvey camp on Pettis Road and "Bunny Knoll" in Black Ash, the property of George Ferrari, her son-in-law, whom was an active hero in her life. She loved all of her sons-in-law, which also include Kenneth Schutz, Barry Heath, John Hughes, and in heaven, Larry Proper. Also her one daughter in law, Mary Vogan. She loved to take her family's money, and actually became quiet excited about it, no matter if it was her son, daughters, grandchildren's, or friend's during a good game of cards, mainly 442. She loved going to the ocean at Cape Hatteras, NC and creating family memories. She was a lifetime member of VFW in Meadville. In her younger years, she enjoyed anytime she spent with DeWayne, which included being on a bowling league at the Eagles and playing shuffleboard on a team for Tamarack Tavern.
We please ask that you come and show your remembrance to a woman whom we loved so much on Wednesday from 3-8 PM at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville and also on Thursday from 10-11 AM at New Beginnings Church of God, 13226 Leslie Rd., Meadville, where Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM and officiated by her children and grandson.
The family suggests if you wish to make a donation, in lieu of flowers, that you may do so, to the true angels that walk on this earth, Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335. We wish to thank them for helping us say good-bye to our mother, with dignity and love. Yet beyond financial donations, Maxine believed family was everything. In the end, in everyone's temporary journey on earth, family is what matters in your final breaths and memories. So we ask that after you read this, you embrace your family today. Whether it be by a loving act of kindness, a hug, a phone call, an "I love you", perhaps forgiveness for something that really in the end, will not matter, in her memory.
Maxine will be laid to rest next to her husband, DeWayne, in Kiser Hill Cemetery, East Mead Twp.
