Mercades "Terry" M. Roberts, 93, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of 13311 Leslie Rd., Meadville, passed away Friday, September 9, 2016 at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.
She was born in Pittsburgh on June 24, 1923 a daughter of the late George Harvey and Mercades Mary (Lavelle) Bollman.
On January 6, 1942 she married Edgar John Roberts; he preceded her in death in 1968.
Terry graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, OH class of 1941 and also attended Miami University. She held several part time jobs while attending college and worked for Curtiss-Wright in Dayton during WWII. She was employed by the former Talon, Inc. of Meadville for 33 years beginning as a secretary to the Plant 7 manager, then for the Vice-President-Sales at Plant 5. Her final position at Talon was as Marketing Administrator in the Sales & Marketing Department, retiring on March 31, 1987.
She was a member of RSVP and Active Aging where she was involved with the Generation Together/Sharing & Caring Program. This program provided volunteers to read to young students in local schools once a week. Terry read to first graders at East End School for eight years until she could not continue due to health problems.
Her hobbies included sewing, crossword puzzles (3 a day), reading, crafts, needlework and cooking. Her volunteer work continued by knitting and crocheting lap robes for nursing homes, plus hats and mittens for children distributed at Christmas through RSVP.
Terry was a cancer survivor having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in May, 1996 and was treated by Dr. Steven Piver at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. After undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy, she was finally in remission in August 1999. While recovering from cancer treatments, she resided at Wesbury Retirement Community for two years where she received excellent care. In 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and after surgery and radiation treatments, she was in remission in 2008.
She is survived by a son Jeffrey P. Roberts of Meadville, a daughter Carol A. Scavotto and her husband Stephen of Amelia Island, FL, five grandchildren Heather Roberts Young and her husband Eric of Yorktown, VA., Sarah Kelly Palmer and her husband Michael of Warwick, RI, Christopher Kelly and his wife Kate of Monument Beach, MA, Jason Scavotto and his wife Jihyon of Suwanee, GA, Stephanie Scavotto Higgins and her husband Patrick of Amelia Island, FL, four great grandsons Tyler and Alec Young, Finn Palmer, Luke Higgins, two sisters Genevieve C. Timko, Barbara A. Bollman both of Pittsburgh, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter Theresa E. Kelly, four brothers George H., John L., Bernard H., Matthew J. Bollman and a son-in-law Paul Kelly.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 6-8 PM at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 12, 2016, at 10:00 AM at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, with Fr. Tom Trocchio, Parochial Vicar, officiating.
Terry will be laid to rest next to her husband, Edgar, in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
Terry believed that flowers are for the living and memorials can be made to the "Theresa E. Kelly Memorial Fund", National Bank of Coxsackie, 3-7 Reed St., PO Box 400, Coxsackie, NY 12051-0400. This scholarship fund has been established by the Catskill Teachers Assoc. in honor of Theresa Kelly's devotion to teaching. Awards will be presented each year at graduation to sixth grade award winning students. Memorials may also be made to Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute, 16792 Conneaut Lake Road, Meadville, PA 16335.
