Mr. Ralph A. Smock, 88, of 6657 Perry Hwy., Meadville, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2010 at Meadville Medical Center.
Ralph was born in Union Twp., on July 13, 1921, a son of the late Frank and Della (Manges) Smock, Sr.
On July 24, 1965, he married Mary E. Parker; she survives.
Ralph had been employed by the Erie Lackawanna railroad and in 1983 retired from Conrail after 30 years of service. He previously had been employed by the former American Viscose and American Brakeshoe Co. He was a veteran of the US Army during WW II serving with the 12th Armor Division, 17th Infantry Battalion in the European Theatre. Ralph had obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in Herrnberchteim, Germany.
He was a member of St. Johns Community Church of God, the Disabled American Veterans, a lifetime member of the 12th Armor Division Assoc., and the A Company 17th A.I.D. Ralph also held memberships in the Meadville Eagles Club and the V.F.W. Post #2006 of Meadville.
In addition to his wife Mary of 44 years, Ralph is survived by a step-son Karl VanScoter of Meadville, a step-daughter Delores Guthrie of Sandy Lake, a step granddaughter Kelly VanScoter, three step grandsons Robert, William and David Howard, numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Evelyn Hickman and Eleanor Hendershot, two brothers Frank Smock, Jr. and Robert Smock, one niece and two nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, from 4-7 at the Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. 404 Chestnut St., Meadville where Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Pastor Marsha Mitchell, Pastor of St. Johns Community Church of God, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 505 Poplar St., Humane Society of Crawford County, 11012 Kennedy Hill Rd, both of Meadville, PA 16335 or a charity of the donors choice.
Interment will take place in Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Twp.
