Robert R. “Bob” “Schreck” Schreckengost decided to stop living on Tuesday August 16, 2022.
Abundant Husband, Prodigious Brother, and Best Dad in the Universe – Bob wants all of you to be happy; or seek happiness otherwise.
Born on a Sunday in October of 1946, to a newly returned home Marine from the Battle of Iwo Jima (Russ) and Mom (Anne,) a Croatian who was kind to everyone throughout her life, Bob began his trek.
As a member of the original (Meadville) Erie Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps since the latter 1950s, he graduated from Meadville High School in 1965 and shortly later volunteered for service in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam Era, later being honorably discharged like his Dad, a Sergeant.
Bob and Peg (Helen M. Furno) married in July 5, 1968; one of Bob’s life quotes being “The last time I was right was on July 4, 1968.” Together they faced trials that would end most unions, and lived life with a zest and spice which is difficult to define here.
Long and successful tenures with the Erie Thunderbirds (1958-1995); Talon, Inc. (1965-1994); and having to reinvent himself at age fifty after the zipper plant vanished. Bob retired in 2008 and immediately began making life as enriching as possible with Peg. They traveled and made even more friends. On the topic of friends – dozens if not hundreds of friends were made all over. Bob was always quick to note how valuable true friends were and without them, life would be pretty boring.
Their two children Tanya Ellen and Robert Andy are in Bob’s words “Our best accomplishment by far.” Lots could be written about how Dad loved his children and why, but this obituary is not about them, rather him. The relationships he had with Tanya was markedly special and Andy was indeed his best friend.
An avid outdoorsman is a more accurate descriptor than hunter. With well over sixty years spent in the woods, he loved communing with nature in the presence of his brother and son. It was one of his absolute favorite things. He spoke many times of the bond he and his brother Denny had. Bob held his younger brother in the absolute highest regard when it came to character, dignity, and friendship.
Survivors include his spouse of 54 years Peggy, daughter Tanya Schreckengost, son Andy (Darlene) Schreckengost; brother Dennis R. (Barbara) Schreckengost; niece Cristina Schreckengost; and a host of notable special people who would undoubtedly make this the most expensive obituary in Meadville Tribune history. There is one whose tireless efforts in loving, supporting, and being there are noted: Darlene Parsons-West.
Family and friends are invited to call on Friday August 19, 2022, from 11 AM-1 PM at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE, where a Funeral Service will follow at 1 PM with Fr. Joe Petrone, Parochial Vicar, officiating. The service will be live streamed via our facebook page (Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.) Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006 will follow.
Should you desire to donate, Mom would not allow me to encourage sending money to support Mrs. Kim Horner-Dunnagan’s beer repository; instead kindly feel free to donate to the Erie Homes for Children and Adults, 226 E. 27th St., Erie, PA 16504.
