Sherry Lynn McClendon, 61, of 3414 Island Drive, Indianapolis, IN, passed away, December 23, 2021.
Sherry was born on September 21, 1960 in Meadville, PA. She was the daughter of the late Genelle Brown and Tommy Hunter.
Sherry spent her early childhood years in Meadville, PA, alongside her many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Sherry was a 1979 graduate of Wilson High School in Florence, SC. Many of her lifelong friendships were developed at Wilson High; in fact she was known to attend every single class reunion for years after she graduated. Shortly after graduating from high school, Sherry married Phillip Capice McClendon Sr. on February 12, 1980. Their love flourished for each other and they later had two children; Shameka Shontell McClendon and Phillip Capice McClendon Jr. Sherry was employed by Bell South in South Carolina for over 20 years. The company is known as Avaya today. Her position gave her the opportunity to travel to many fun places such as San Francisco, CA and New Orleans, LA and eventually landed her a position that transferred her to Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta, Sherry and her children attended Elizabeth Baptist Church. There she sang in the choir and served on the “Feed the Homeless” ministry. After spending years in Atlanta, GA, Sherry moved back to her hometown in Meadville, PA, to be closer to family. She was a member of United Faith Fellowship Church of God. She served on the food pantry ministry and the Pastor’s Aide ministry. Sherry participated in the annual Gospel Fest and was a member of the local NAACP #2271.
Sherry’s family was her joy! Her greatest love was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also cherished her canine companions, Poncho and Bella.
Sherry spent her later years under the care of her son, Phillip McClendon Jr. She battled many health issues. He describes his mother as “ a true definition of a soul survivor and soldier for The Lord.”
Sherry leaves to cherish her memory, a sister, Juanita Wright and nephew, David Wright Jr. (Jacksonville, FL), a daughter Shameka McClendon (Atlanta, GA), Phillip McClendon and his wife, LaTessa (Indianapolis, IN), three granddaughters, Kayla, Victoria, and Alyssa McClendon (Atlanta, GA), and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will dearly miss her.
Family and friends are invited to call from 6-8 PM on Friday, January 7, 2022, at STEPHEN P. MIZNER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 404 CHESTNUT ST., MEADVILLE. The family kindly requests that masks be worn.
A Home Going Service will be held on Saturday, at 12 PM at United Faith Fellowship Church, 561 State Street, Meadville, with Rev. Wayne Burnett officiating. The family kindly requests that masks be worn.
Sherry will be laid to rest in Greendale Cemetery.
