Stephen H. Pickens, 65, of 980 Limber Rd., Meadville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 16, 2011, at Meadville Medical Center, following a courageous year long battle with cancer.
Stephen was born in Meadville, on July 17, 1946, a son of the late Calvin H. and Doratha L. (Osborne) Pickens.
On August 24, 1968 Stephen married Jane M. Smith; she survives.
He was a member of Stone United Methodist Church. Meadville.
For several years, Stephen was owner and operator of P3 Imaging. He had previously been employed in a managerial position with the former Abex Corp., the former J & J Food Service and at the former Talon, Inc. for ten years. On June 13, 1968 Stephen entered the US Army where he served in Vietnam with the Intelligence Dept. and had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant before his honorable discharge on December 16, 1970. A 1964 graduate of Meadville High School, Stephen went on to further his education by graduating from Allegheny College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Humanities. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, Stephen was also a member of the Meadville Country Club and a former member of the Iroquois Boating and Fishing Club. Stephen was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins fan. His hobbies included working outdoors and working on home remodeling projects not only for himself but also for his children. He had a passion for golf second only to the passion he had for his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Jane of 43 years, Stephen is survived by three children Jeffrey Stephen Pickens and his wife Heather of Annapolis, MD, Michael Calvin Pickens and his partner Pearl Leader of York, Laura Jane Pickens of Pittsburgh, three grandchildren Olivia and Jacob Pickens of Annapolis, MD, Ava Pickens of York, Emmy Leader, Pearls daughter of York, three brothers John C. Pickens and his wife Ann of Windsor, CT, Charles O. Pickens and his wife Jean of Farmington, CT, David W. Pickens and his wife Joye of Cochranton, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2-7 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, PA 16335.
Funeral Services, with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006, will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, at Stone United Methodist Church, 956 S. Main St., Meadville, with Rev. Sarah Roncolato, Pastor, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meadville Medical Center Foundation, C/O Hospice House, 1015 Grove St., or Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute, 16792 Conneaut Lake Rd., both in Meadville, PA 16335.
