During his years at home Thomas enjoyed playing baseball, boxing, wood working and working on leather projects. He graduated in 1963 from Baldwin High School. During the next ten years he owned a dairy farm on Route 285, near Cochranton. For the first several years he worked as a dairy farmer, and later he raised beef cattle. In 1965 he was hired by Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad where he worked on call as a Locomotive Engineer for 37 years. He retired on June 30, 2004.
On December 18, 1971, Thomas married Mary Ann Vernier. The two met at Conneaut Lake Park, and they were married for 50 years; she survives.

In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his younger brother James Steinbeck.
Thomas enjoyed following real estate and watching softball at the Lincoln Ave. Complex. He also enjoyed mowing his yard with his John Deer tractor. He had fond memories of walking trails with his wife and taking his family to the former Stable Pit and Pub for dinner.
