Velma L. Battles

Velma Louise Battles, 76, of 16033 Battles Road, Saegertown, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Marquette Hospice House, Meadville.

Velma was born in Meadville on January 30, 1938, a daughter of the late Lawrence C. and Charlotte A. (Weyman) Reichel.

On October 16, 1965 Velma married Herman B. Battles; he survives.

She was an active member of Littles Corners United Methodist Church where she played the organ for 25 years, served on the Executive Board as Church Secretary for several years.

Velma was a 1955 graduate of Saegertown High School. Community involvement was important to her. For 25 years she served as Hayfield Twp. Secretary/Treasurer and for 30 years as a member of the Hayfield Election Board. Additionally she was a member of the American Cancer Society board of directors and served as secretary for the Crawford County Association of Township Supervisors. She had a deep love for her family, especially her grandchildren. They were a huge part of her life, as she was theirs; she will be sadly missed.

In addition to her husband Herman of 48 years, Velma is survived by a son Jeffery S. Battles and his wife Alice of Conneaut Lake, three grandchildren Kylee, Logan and Maggie, a sister Laurie Johnston and her husband Dale of Meadville, a brother David L. Reichel and his wife Joyce of Blooming Valley, her beloved Aunt Irene Gaines of Saegertown, a nephew Bradley Johnston and his wife Amber, a niece Kelley Spring and her husband Bradley.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 11- 1 and 4-7 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM with Pastor Dave Brumagin officiating.

Velma will be laid to rest in Saegertown Cemetery.
