Walter "Wally" T. Leonhart, 101, of Saegertown, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at home.
Wally was born in Meadville, on June 22, 1920, son of the late H. Jack and Elsie (Putnam) Leonhart.
On May 22, 1943 Walter married Virginia Farnham; she survives.
He was the oldest living member of Saegertown United Methodist Church.
A WW II veteran, Wally entered the US Army on April 9, 1942. He served time in Africa before being sent to Italy where he was a member of the 194th Field Artillery Unit. He participated in the Battle of Anzio which led to the Allies' capture of Rome. He also served in France and Germany before being honorably discharged on October 26, 1945. Wally was a recipient of five Bronze Stars, a Silver Star, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal.
In his early years Wally had owned and operated Wally's City Service Station on the corner of Market and Center Streets in Meadville before becoming employed by the former Grants Feed Store. He later bought into the Spudnut Shop donut franchise which he enjoyed owning The Spudnut Shoppe on North Street for many years. Wally was a charter member of Saegertown American Legion Post #205 and served as Post Commander in 1983. He enjoyed woodworking as a pastime.
In addition to his wife, Virginia of 78 years, Wally is survived by two children Nevin B. Leonhart (Marie) of Meadville, Rebecca R. Trobee of Saegertown; two grandchildren Melissa Leonhart of Meadville, Regina Keppel (Earl) of Union City; a great grandson Garrett; a brother Richard Crane of Meadville; and a half sister Shirley Halliburton of Murfreesboro, TN.
In addition to his parents, Wally was preceded in death by a grandson Nevin B. Leonhart II; a step brother Vernon Moore; a step sister Denise Saeger; and a son in law Bill Trobee.
Family and friends are invited to call from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Saegertown United Methodist Church, 620 Euclid Ave., Saegertown, where Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Jeff Little officiating.
Wally will be laid to rest in Saegertown Cemetery, with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of Interim Hospice and the Meadville VA Medical Center for the wonderful care they provided.
