Wesley Hughes, 96, of Meadville, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at home.
Wesley was born in Port Gibson, MS, on July 6, 1925, a son of the late J. P. and Carrie (Walker) Hughes.
On November 9, 1946 he married Marie Walker; she preceded him in death on March 17, 2000.
He was a member of St. John Missionary Full Gospel Baptist Church, Meadville.
Wesley attended schools in Mississippi before being drafted. He entered the US Air Force on October 12, 1943 and served his country honorably until his discharge on March 12, 1946. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After moving to Meadville Wesley had worked for various businesses including the Buick Garage, the former Montgomery Wards and the former Talon, Inc. He later became employed by the former Abex Corporation, where he served as President of the Abex Credit Union. Wesley retired after 40 years of service. Additionally he drove for Hubbard Bus Service for many years while working full time and then went back to driving bus for them after he retired, totaling 38 years of service to Hubbard Bus. Wesley was a 32nd Degree member of Giblem Lodge #29, a member of Shriners Pharoah Temple in Farrell, and a member of the former Triple City Elks #694. In his younger years he enjoyed golfing and hunting. He was known for making wine and jelly. He enjoyed traveling, working in his yard, but most of all, time spent with family. He will be missed.
Wesley is survived by four children John Wesley Hughes (Vivian) of Erie, Patricia Hughes of Meadville, Nita Hughes of San Antonio, TX, Elaine Hughes of Meadville; 16 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife Marie, of 53 years, Wesley was preceded in death by two sons, Howard Hughes, Allen Hughes; and a sister Mattie Harvey.
Family and friends are invited to call from 11 AM - 1 PM on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at St. John Missionary Full Gospel Baptist Church, 792 N. Main St., Meadville, where a Home Going Service will be follow at 1 PM with Rev. Floyd McClure officiating.
Wesley will be laid to rest in Greendale Cemetery with Full Military Honors by VFW Post #2006.
